L.O.V.E.

When we arrive at Prime Steakhouse, we’re taken to a table reserved for two directly in front of the Bellagio fountains. Shane being the gentleman that he is pulls out my chair. And before I can ask about the next showing, the maître de hands Shane the wine menu and lets us know the next water performance is in ten minutes.

“This is very romantic.”

“I know.” Shane smiles, eyeing the menu. “I’m hungry. You know what you want?”

“I’m going to go with the soup.”

“Your stomach still bothering you?”

“It’s best I don’t chance it.”

“I feel you.” Shane places the menu on the edge of the table.

“You getting the usual?”

“You know it.” He takes a sip of water. “Have fun in bed today?”

“Not really. I was too busy missing you.”

“Kinda missed you too.”

“You’re just saying that.” I rub his hand.

“Na, for real. I wished you were with us today.”

Our waiter interrupts with warm bread and what looks like whipped garlic butter, and then takes our order.

“Your aunt is funny.” I pinch off a piece of bread. It melts in my mouth.

“Yeah, she’s like my second mom. I ever tell you she helped raise me? My moms was working like two full-time jobs and going to school at night. My auntie would help my dad out ’cause he got hurt on the job. She and my oldest sister would make sure I got to all my games, practices, and stuff. My mom would sneak in for some of my games, even if it was for only fifteen minutes on her lunch break. She’d be the loudest one on the sidelines letting me know she made it.” Shane smiles at the memories. “Man, she ain’t miss one game. She still the queen holding it down for the family and keeping us all together. I get the credit, but she’s the brains behind it all. I don’t know where I’d be without her. I was determined to make it big, not necessarily for me, but I was gonna make it so I could retire her. So when I got drafted in the first round, my first check went to buying her a house and I told her she would never have to work another day in her life. She on a permanent vacation. I think she’s in China visiting the Great Wall right now. I’m waiting for her to send pictures.”

“That’s sweet. I can’t wait to meet her.”

“You’ll get to meet her at the wedding. She, uhhh, how do I put it. She’s very over-protective of her only son. Leave it to her, I’ll stay single for the rest of my life. I’m not ashamed to say that I can be somewhat of a momma’s boy.”

“Really?” I laugh sarcastically. “I wouldn’t have guessed it.”

“I love my momma. That’s another reason why family is so important to me. She instilled that in us when we was young. We look out for one another, no matter what.”

“So your older sister, is she with her in China?”

“Nah, she just moved to Canada with her husband.
